 9elev3n, not just another female producer

Born September 11, in Southern California, 9elev3n quickly learned that music came very naturally. At the age of three, 9elev3n knew every song on the radio and always tried to play them as well. As 9elev3n grew older, so did her passion for music, which motivated her to create and produce beats. Her producer name (9elev3n) came from her birthday, but her real name is Porsche. If you add her real name (Porshce) and her producer name (9elev3n, 9-11) you create the infamous car Porsche 911. She decided to drop the part of her name Porsche so she wouldn’t be affiliated with the car company. While living in California, 9elev3n worked with a few artists, but found herself wanting to expand her archive. She then began making music with a deep southern feel. To show how passionate she was about her new southern genre, she moved from California to Atlanta the capital of crunk. Still in Atlanta, she is now currently working with several artists and has been building a name for herself ever since. She has been entering beat battles and even started a bidding war from several different management companies. Sandy Scribbles, a young music producer and song writer out South Florida has been producing Pop, R&B, Hip-Hop, Dance, House, Electro-Pop, Dub Step, etc for over three years. She has worked with a wide range of independent artists & labels and it has translated into her ‘across the board’ style. She constantly studies what is being played on the radio, trends in music, and drowns herself in different styles and cultures. What sets her apart is her ability to put a fresh twist on popular production styles, an outside of the box attitude, and a witty approach to song transitions and formats. In a recent interview she said “I’m teaching indie artists how to sell their music and I’m helping record labels discover talent that is already selling. Everybody is winning!”

Jamille Luney has a prosperous new career, jamilleluney.com. She will continue to produce on the side, but her primary role is as a music analyst and owner of information technology companies specializing in digital formats and distribution. “Music formats determine how you distribute and sell your music. Nobody sells or distributes cassette tapes anymore. The same will be true of CDs” says Luney.

If you’ve never heard of Jamille Luney, she produced a few songs for artists such as Nas, Rakim, Beyonce, Alicia Keys, and we heard she has one more crazy remix scheduled for release of Keyshia Cole. Luney has foregone the standard role of music producer (she’ll still produce on the side she claims) to pursue music information technology. This still places Jamille at the heart and sole of the entertainment industry and with unlimited earning potential. “I’m not gonna lie money was a factor. I love Silicon Valley, Bill Gates (Microsoft), and Steve Jobs (Apple)” Jamille chuckles.

“Mp3′s we’re huge! We’re preparing for the next format” she explains. “As everyday Internet bandwith and demands increase, so will record sales and the need for a new format.” Luney’s does not want to be in videos or on T.V, although she can make one phone call and be up there. “That’s not me, I’m a computer nerd” she laughs “I used to want to be in music videos when I was in college. It’s weird I just outgrew it i guess.” she shrugs “I also discovered Bill Gates and realized I’m an attractive black female computer nerd who knows a lot about music. If I can put this together hmmm….” she laughs. “It also helps having two parents whom are lawyers.”

Her mother, Gwynn Swinson, a North Carolina attorney and Vice President of Community and Public Relations for Duke University Hospitals, acts as Jamille’s general counsel and legal advisor. Jamille’s father, Percy Luney, also an attorney and a graduate of Harvard Law and manages Jamille. Percy is the former Dean of NCCU Law School, FAMU Law School, First black president of National Judicial College, and is currently working for Space Florida.

Another inspiration for Jamille was her desire to help independent artists. “Some of the best talent and music is underground, without quesiton. When my sister and I both had our identities stolen, for some reason it set something off inside of me. Our credit still is not fixed to this day and Rob’s social security number is still frozen or something. It’s crazy! I know that event is random, but it did something to me. Don’t ask me why ” she explains. ” The other half is my parents. As lawyers, I watched my parents help a lot of people. My dad was adamant about African Americans, Latinos, and other minorities getting quality education and graduate degrees. That’s why he primarily worked at HBCUs. My mother’s motto has always been ‘To whom much is give much is required’. I love to help people it’s a great feeling and I really love helping indie artists.”

Tahkiya Willis was born during a time when hip hop music was first breaking ground and pop music was rapidly changing.  Her biggest idol and musical inspiration, Michael Jackson, was at the top of the charts while she was a kid growing up in Springfield, Massachusetts.  It was at the tender age of 8 that Willis fell in love with hip hop and pop music genres and realized she wanted to spend the rest of her life making music. Singer/actress Aaliyah was another one of Willis’ musical influences and the inspiration from which the acronyms R.E.D. are derived. After Aaliyah’s tragic passing in 2001, R.E.D. decided to move to New York City to pursue her dream of being a music producer.  It was her talent as an MC, however, that gave her the opportunity to perform on Joe Jacksons Hip Hop Bootcamp  a pilot reality show geared for network television. Though the pilot was never picked up, R.E.D made it to the finals and received great encouragement from the celebrity judging panel, including Joe Jackson, Kurtis Blow, and Marly Marl who gave her a perfect score of 10 for her rap performance.

Over the past 3 years, R.E.D. has become a producing sensation online and has earned a huge following on YouTube where she showcases her music arrangement and production skills in short videos.  She has collaborated with up and coming artists such as Sunita Devi, Danger Rich, and Steady Beatz, just to name a few.  Her music and videos have been played over 700,000 times on MySpace and YouTube.  And, her instrumentals have been featured on season 2 of Bravo network’s The Real Housewives of Atlanta.

R.E.D. currently resides in New York City. She works for a juvenile detention center as a juvenile counselor and volunteers her time at the Columbia University Medical Center in the Childrens Cancer ward. R.E.D. relealsed her first mixtape entitled The REDmix in June of 2010 and was well received by fans.  She has also signed with IMMG Development/True Sound Music Group, who have worked with artist that range from Alicia Keys to Michael Jackson.
